Orlando residents and visitors could soon find their commute to major destinations like the airport and theme parks more convenient with the city's latest financial commitment to public transportation. As reported by WFTV, the city has approved up to $100 million for an expansion of the SunRail system. This expansion aims to connect the commuter rail service to the Orlando International Airport, the Orange County Convention Center, and entertainment areas, including Disney Springs.
While the final route and full costs are still under development, the proposed enhancements would bridge a significant gap that currently forces passengers to disembark at the Sand Lake Road station, then endure a free Lynx bus ride to the airport, as FOX 35 Orlando reported. A survey highlighted a strong local support for such a connection, with 77% of locals indicating they would use SunRail services if it provided a direct route to the airport.
The plan complements the broader vision for the Sunshine Corridor, aimed not only at linking SunRail to the airport but also to facilitate intercity travel with Brightline service extending to Miami and potentially Tampa. The infusion of funds is a nod to both the existing demand and potential growth of commuter rail as a viable transportation option within the region's expanding infrastructure.
