The community is in mourning following a police standoff at an Orlando tattoo parlor that left a young tattoo artist dead. A vigil was held last night to honor the life of Kaleb Williams, a 20-year-old father and tattoo artist. Attendees released balloons and candles into the air as a tribute to Williams, who was killed last Friday during a SWAT operation conducted by the Orlando Police Department. According to WESH, those gathered called for clarity and accountability from law enforcement over the events that led to Williams' untimely death.
Williams' family contests the police's narrative, claiming that he was not involved in the criminal activities for which the police were serving a warrant. His mother, Natalie Birch-Escribano, described her son as a bystander caught in an untenable situation, saying in a statement obtained by WESH, "He didn't have no warrant, he wasn't armed, they literally, he was at the wrong place, wrong time." The OPD has not yet specified if anyone else is in custody or whether Williams was the subject of the search warrant.
The OPD's operation was based on suspicions of drug and firearms activities, and it was reported that a person with an "AK-47 style" rifle was seen exiting and re-entering the tattoo parlor as officers arrived. As the situation unfolded, gunfire from the police resulted in Williams' death. Chief Eric Smith of the Orlando Police Department indicated that multiple suspects were believed to be inside the tattoo parlor when the warrant was served. The department clarified that no officers were injured during the incident, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando.
As the community seeks answers, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken on the investigation of the shooting. While the investigation moves forward, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
