Workers at the Frito‑Lay plant on San Antonio’s Northeast Side got an unplanned early-morning break on Tuesday when a piece of equipment caught fire and the entire facility was evacuated. Fire crews moved in quickly, isolated the blaze and guided plant personnel outside. Everyone was accounted for, and there were no immediate reports of injuries, as reported by Fox San Antonio.
Fire started inside a machine's heat exchange
According to Fox San Antonio, the fire broke out inside a heat exchange unit in a large piece of processing equipment. Crews concentrated on cooling that machinery to keep the flames from spreading farther into the plant.
Crews arrived just before 3 a.m.
The San Antonio Fire Department arrived just before 3 a.m. at the plant off Greatland Drive near Loop 410, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Employees were moved to outdoor muster points, where they were checked in and accounted for while firefighters worked inside.
Blaze contained in roughly 45 minutes
Firefighters had the situation under control in about 45 minutes after getting to the scene, according to Fox San Antonio. Crews then stayed on site to continue cooling the equipment and venting smoke, and the plant remained shut while follow-up checks were carried out.
No injuries reported; follow-up details limited
There were no reported injuries, and the evacuation was described as precautionary, according to the San Antonio Express-News. Officials did not immediately release further information about damage inside the facility or how production might be affected.
