Philadelphia's Register of Wills, John Sabatina, has initiated a new community effort to benefit local veterans with a Suit & Dress Drive, an announcement that signifies the office's sustained commitment to veterans' affairs. Set for today, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, the event will take place at The First African Baptist Church, according to the city's official website. In conjunction with Philadelphia Veterans Affairs and Resources, and The Wardrobe, the drive aims to collect professional attire to support veterans seeking employment or attending formal events after their military service.
Residents of Philadelphia, along with pastors and interfaith leaders, are being encouraged to donate new or gently used suits and dresses to assist veterans in their post-service life transitions. As stated by the city's official website, these contributions are more than just garments; they are keys to new opportunities and are a sign of community gratitude for the veterans' prior sacrifices. "Our veterans deserve every opportunity to succeed," Sabatina, an Army veteran himself, underscored in the statement.
The site chosen for the drive—The First African Baptist Church, located at 700–798 N. 67th Street—bears historical significance and hints at the broader community synergy at play. The partnership with Pastor Terrence Griffith highlights the interfaith community's role in such collective acts of giving. This drive fortifies The Register of Wills' Office tradition of community outreach, which has previously included a variety of programs aimed at enriching the lives of families, seniors, and particularly, veterans in Philadelphia.
The clothing drive is presented not only as a philanthropic effort but also as an essential contribution to the well-being and dignity of veterans. For Sabatina, it is a personal mission reflecting his own journey from military to civic service. "A single suit or dress can open a door—and we want to help open as many doors as possible," Sabatina expressed his hope for the drive's impact, as noted by the City of Philadelphia.
