An encounter between Pierce County deputies and a man living in a tent culminated in the man's arrest on multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer. The incident occurred on November 4th when deputies, performing a routine check on an area recently cleared of a homeless encampment, found a man with his dog in a tent on the property located at the 8300 block of Portland Ave. E. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department blotter, the man was accused of trespassing and later engaged in an altercation with the deputies after providing several false names.
The situation escalated when the deputies attempted to detain the man for identification purposes, leading to him assaulting an officer with his dog before trying to make a run for it. The confrontation ended with a struggle, the deployment of a taser, and the man being taken into custody. Not immediately identified, he was booked into the Pierce County Jail under the name John Doe. It was revealed through a fingerprint scan that the suspect had existing felony warrants out of Arizona, Ohio, and Olympia.
Charges against the individual included not just the assault and resisting arrest but also harassment, trespassing, and animal cruelty. The dog, thrown at a deputy during the incident, escaped without injuries. It was placed under the care of animal control and is currently being cared for at the Humane Society, ensuring it was away from the chaos of conflict and the precarity of a transient home.
