Pleasanton's cityscape and economic potential are poised for further development with the appointment of a new key player in the local government. According to a recent announcement on the City of Pleasanton's official website, City Manager Gerry Beaudin has appointed Derek Farmer as the Assistant Director of Community and Economic Development, Planning Manager. This appointment is effective as of November 10, just a day before our current date.

Farmer is reportedly bringing to the table an extensive background with 27 years in the trenches of land use planning and development review, as well as a strong portfolio in community engagement. He's not new to leadership positions, having taken the helm of planning divisions across the Bay Area. Among his accomplishments are spearheading zoning ordinance updates and leading development and environmental review teams on behalf of local governments and federal agencies. This seasoned planner also has a track record in the private sector, where he has been pivotal in redevelopment efforts in cities including Hayward, Union City, and Fremont.

"Derek's broad experience in both public and private sector planning will be a great asset to Pleasanton," City Manager Gerry Beaudin expressed in a statement. According to the City of Pleasanton, Beaudin highlighted Farmer's collaborative approach and familiarity with the Tri-Valley communities as instrumental for the city's future planning for housing, economic development, and tackling long-term community needs.

In his new role, Farmer is set to swiftly guide policy development and take over the management of planning and development review activities. Another key area he will support is strategic economic initiatives intended to improve service delivery, enhance clarity and predictability in the development review process, and to even more strongly engage with residents, businesses, and project stakeholders. The City Manager's office suggests that Farmer's appointment is a strategic move aimed at bolstering Pleasanton's community and economic development priorities.

According to the City of Pleasanton, Derek Farmer himself shared his enthusiasm about the new role, saying, "As someone who has both lived and worked in Pleasanton, I am excited to return,” said Farmer. “I look forward to working with City staff and the community to support thoughtful growth and continue building a vibrant and welcoming city." Farmer's academic credentials include a Master of Urban Planning degree from San José State University, equipping him with the theoretical foundation for his practical achievements.
