President Donald Trump has indicated he is willing to meet with New York City’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, after a period of tense political exchanges. ABC7NY reports that Trump, who previously called Mamdani a “communist,” said yesterday that “we’ll work something out,” signaling a potential discussion on city matters.
Trump, before leaving his Florida estate for Washington, said, “The mayor of New York, I will say, would like to meet with us,” according to The New York Post. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that no meeting date has been confirmed. These statements come amid Trump’s past criticisms of the city, including threats to cut federal funding and the possibility of a federal takeover.
Mamdani, who won the mayoral race against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo by a wide margin, has said he is open to meeting with the president if it benefits the city. In a statement reported by ABC7NY, he emphasized his goal to create a “Trump-proof” New York while remaining willing to work with others for the city’s interests.
In an interview with NBC New York last week, Mamdani said he is willing to work with anyone if it benefits the city, while also opposing policies that could harm New Yorkers.
