Last Saturday, a 16-year-old driver hit a man lying on Quitman Street in Houston, killing him. The crash happened around 8:25 p.m. in the 2700 block of Quitman near Davis. The teen, driving a white Ford Explorer, stayed at the scene and showed no signs of impairment. Houston police are investigating.
What police reported
According to the City of Houston media release, investigators say the white Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound at 2700 Quitman when it hit a pedestrian who was lying in the middle of the roadway. The release identifies the pedestrian as a 36-year-old man and states that Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene. Police say the teen driver stayed put and, in the words of the release, “showed no signs of impairment.”
Timeline and emergency response
Dispatch logs and local reporting show HPD received a call about a person down at 8:24 p.m., with fire units arriving shortly after and a medic declaring the victim dead at 8:33 p.m., as reported by Click2Houston. Officers blocked portions of Quitman and Davis while investigators worked the scene, and traffic was diverted around the area during the response.
Police say possible intent under review
Local television coverage notes that police said the man may have intentionally placed himself in the roadway, a detail that remains under investigation, as per FOX26 Houston. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and reviewing any available video as they try to piece together what led up to the fatal impact.
Quitman has seen other deadly incidents
This is not the first deadly crash on Quitman this year. In August, a bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run on the 2000 block of Quitman, as detailed by ABC13. That earlier case is still open and is part of a string of serious traffic incidents on or near Quitman in recent months.
