Community members in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood are reporting the unsettling discovery of racist flyers, some marked with "KKK," scattered in public spaces such as the Cross Street Market area. According to CBS News, these flyers have caused distress among the residents, with one expressing their thoughts on the abnormality of such hate-filled sentiments in today's society.
Despite the quick removal of the flyers by locals, the incident has sparked a broader conversation about the persistence of racism and division within the community. "It's really sad because we're in a divided country now," one resident reflected in an interview with CBS News, insisting that such messages are not a true reflection of their neighborhood. Meanwhile, Baltimore City Councilmember Zac Blanchard has urged leaders at all levels to publicly denounce these and other similar acts of hate, as he did in a statement.
Similar incidents have occurred before in South Baltimore, with the Southern Poverty Law Center pointing out that there are still active KKK factions, including the recently emerged "Maryland White Knights." As WMAR-2 News reported, this group may be connected to the disseminated supremacist flyers, unconfirmed, keeping in mind their past involvement in such hate campaigns.
Councilman Zac Blanchard condemned these recent acts, asserting that "Hate has no place in our city," in a statement detailed by WMAR-2 News. Both the school district and police department have been notified to take the appropriate measures toward addressing this incident.
