Raleigh and Wake County are on the lookout for new group of individuals prepared to step up to the plate and serve more than 1.19 million residents. The city's Emergency Communications 911 Center has opened the application period for its Training Academy, inviting candidates to apply from Nov. 26 to Dec. 17, as reported by the City of Raleigh's official announcement.

Beginning on Feb. 19, the academy will train candidates over 12 to 14 weeks to become proficient call takers or telecommunicators, all while drawing a starting salary of $49,100, even if they step into the role with no prior experience. Applicants will need to submit their forms by 11:59 p.m. on the closing date of Dec. 17, with succeeding candidates then taking them through a series of employment skills tests known as the CritiCall assessment. This rigorous test will evaluate vital skills for the role, including data entry, typing speed, spelling, and reading comprehension, according to the city's website.

Those who couch potato through the assessment will then be funneled into a virtual panel interview, pushing through a criminal background check, a psychological evaluation, and additional pre-employment requirements before commencing their academy training. The job's core responsibilities, woven throughout this intensive program, include responding to emergency (911) and non-emergency calls, gathering critical information from callers, and accurately data entering information into the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.
