Round Rock, a city that values its history and community leaders, has announced its latest group of Local Legends. Rev. Dr. A.W. Anthony Mays and the Round Rock Independent School District (RRISD) were recognized for their substantial contributions to the city's rich narrative. The Local Legend Awards program, which started in 1990, is dedicated to honoring those connected to the city's foundation or instrumental in chronicling its story, particularly through historic preservation and public education efforts.
This year's ceremony, conducted on November 6, highlighted individuals and institutions that have influenced Round Rock's culture and development. According to the City of Round Rock official announcement, honorees were chosen based on their association with the city’s founding or growth, impact of service, and achievements bringing honor to Round Rock. The Historic Preservation Commission members Richard Parson and Sharon Whitaker shared these details as they presented the awards.
Rev. Dr. A.W. Anthony Mays holds a special place in the city's history as the first African-American student to attend Round Rock High School following desegregation in 1964. His academic and athletic prowess at the school laid the groundwork for an impressive future, including serving as the pastor of one of Central Texas's largest historically Black churches for over thirty years. "He has led Mount Sinai ever since, and in 2019 completed the master’s degree he sought to earn earlier after returning to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary," details the article from the City of Round Rock.
Similarly, historical RRISD, formed concurrently with the city's incorporation in 1913, has had a significant hand in shaping educational avenues for generations. Initially, a small rural district comprised of fewer than 1,000 students, the district expanded rapidly under Superintendent Noel Grisham from 1957 to 1979; during this time, the student numbers grew from about 1,000 to 8,000. Today, the district spans 56 campuses, serving more than 46,000 students with a commitment to maintaining high standards through a variety of award-winning programs.
The City of Round Rock continues its dedication to preserving and educating the public about its storied past through these annual recognitions.
