A fatal incident unfolded on the East Side when a man struck by racing drivers on Interstate 10 succumbed to his injuries, officials announced. Robert Espinoza, a 33-year-old local, was identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office as the deceased. Following the violent crash that occurred on Wednesday night, Espinoza fought for his life but eventually passed away, cementing the tragedy that has since reverberated through the community.
The sequence of events, as reported by KSAT, began close to 11:30 p.m. in the 8700 block of Interstate 10 eastbound. Two young men, Kyle Jin Liu and Evan Moreno, both 20, were allegedly found to have been racing their white BMWs. In what seemed to be a catastrophic lapse of judgment, the BMW M4 operated by Liu struck Espinoza's Nissan, leading to the car rolling over multiple times.
Espinoza received immediate medical attention and was quickly transported to a hospital, where his condition was described as critical. Unfortunately, his battle ended in loss. The San Antonio Police Department noted in their preliminary report that the two BMW drivers were apprehended and charged with racing, causing serious bodily injury. This was also confirmed in the coverage of the incident by Fox San Antonio.
Liu and Moreno were both released on Saturday, records reflect, raising questions and concerns among those awfully affected by the crash.
