The San Antonio community is grappling with the tragic discovery of two deceased homeless men in the Deco District, a historically busy area known for its prominent homeless population. As reported by Fox San Antonio, the bodies were found between city districts 1 and 7, raising alarms about safety concerns in the neighborhood. San Antonio Police have initiated an investigation while the city's residents are reportedly witnessing an upswing in aggressive encounters.
Amid these developments, District 7 Councilwoman Marina Alderete-Gavito underscored the critical need for a joint effort involving the city, the local community, and law enforcement to ensure public safety. "We work with the neighborhoods. We work with our police officers, we work with via trans transit security to stay vigilant in that area," she stated, highlighting a communal approach. In her dialogue with the public, Gavito recognized that it's not only about vigilance, but compassion and aid for the homeless population. "We need to connect them to the help and resources that already exist. And quite frankly, they deserve to be protected," she told Fox San Antonio.
Further intensifying the neighborhood’s unease, a KENS 5 report detailed two murders within 800 feet of each other over a span of two days. Both victims were said to be familiar figures among the district's homeless community. A resident expressed his distress over the incidents, elucidating, "Kids pass through here going from school to home, people walk their dogs. People exercise around here. This is a very mobile as far as walkability neighborhood," and noted the district's prospering business landscape juxtaposed with the need to reconcile safety and dignity for the unhoused.
