A man has been taken into custody following a tragic wrong-way collision that claimed the life of a woman and left another in critical condition, as per reports from the San Antonio Police Department. Carlos Guerra, a 42-year-old man, was arrested at the scene of the crash, which occurred just after 11:45 p.m. on Sunday night along Interstate 35, near the North St. Mary's Street exit.
Traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-35, KSAT reported that Guerra was in a blue 2021 Chevy Silverado when a Bexar County Sheriff’s deputy, noticing his erratic driving, tried to perform a traffic stop. The deputy, driving on the correct northbound side, attempted to signal Guerra with his emergency lights. Guerra, however, did not respond to the deputy's attempts to stop him.
The eventual collision was a head-on impact into a white 2024 Chevy Express, which was moving north on the highway. The passenger of the Express, a woman aged 50, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver, a 50-year-old man, was urgently transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Following the crash, San Antonio police evaluated Guerra and determined that he was under the influence, leading to charges of intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault, KENS 5 reports. Court records revealed that a Bexar County judge has set Guerra's bond at $350,000. The identity of the deceased woman has not yet been confirmed.
