Following the detainments of several individuals by federal immigration agents on Tuesday in Santa Monica, the city has stated that address community concerns and outline support measures. In a move to offer reassurance and solidarity, the city expressed its commitment to uphold the values of dignity, fairness, and inclusion amidst this period of anxiety and uncertainty.
In a clear stand against recent ICE operations, the city affirmed that it does not participate in immigration enforcement, emphasizing that the Santa Monica Police Department does not engage in raids, arrests, or detentions based on immigration status. "We stand with everyone in Santa Monica who is concerned, fearful, or grieving," the City of Santa Monica stated in a message on its website. Such operations have not only left a palpable sense of fear in the community but also threatened the fragile trust built between residents and local authorities.
The city's response includes a multi-pronged strategy aimed at supporting those impacted by the ICE operations. This strategy encompasses the coordination with legal aid and immigrant rights organizations to provide resources, offering knowledge about rights and legal representation, and enabling access to social, health, and economic support systems. Additionally, the city is actively joining litigation that challenges what it views as racial profiling in immigration enforcement.
Underscoring the practical steps taken to bridge the gap between policy and tangible assistance, the city urges affected individuals and families to reach out for support. "If you or someone you know has been affected, please reach out to [email protected] or visit santamonica.gov/safeathome so we can direct you to support, and coordinate assistance where possible," the statement reads. This initiative aims to ensure none feel isolated in the face of federally mandated challenges to their sense of belonging and safety.
