The Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority board reviewed a recent inspection of the International Bridge conducted by Modjeski and Masters, COWI North America, and the Great Lakes Engineering Group. Brad Croop from Modjeski and Masters stated, "The bridge is in overall good condition," noting that typical aging issues like corrosion and paint loss are planned for future maintenance, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Karl Hansen, the IBA bridge engineer, emphasized the proactive efforts of the staff, saying, "Our dedicated staff ensures the safety of our customers and protects the public investment in the bridge." The inspection praised the small maintenance team for their work, which compares favorably with other bridges of similar age, as reported by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority board completed 77% of recommended maintenance from prior inspections, including work on green pedestrian railings and parts of the U.S. arch. An in-house epoxy overlay on the Canadian approach spans saved $178,459 compared to contractor estimates. Linda Hoath and Natalie Kinloch were elected chair and vice-chair for 2026, with other board members from Michigan and Ontario. The board scheduled 2026 meetings and provides updates through its website and X, as stated by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
