A 29-year-old registered sex offender, James “Jake” Harrison Newcomer, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for sexually exploiting teens following his escape from electronic monitoring, as stated in an announcement by U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd in U.S. District Court in Seattle. According to court documents, Newcomer, who had a previous conviction for the rape of a child, cut off his ankle monitor in January 2024 and over the next few months used social media platforms like Discord and Snapchat to contact and subsequently sexually assault teens, with victims ranging from 12 to 16 years of age, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
During the period between February and April 2024, Newcomer hid behind the guise of a teenage boy to establish connections with his victims, then arranged to meet them in person, where he would provide drugs and alcohol before sexually assaulting them; the abuse extended across multiple counties in Washington and Oregon, leaving a trail of trauma that, as U.S. District Judge John H. Chun put it during the sentencing, represented "heartbreaking crimes." Multiple devices found in Newcomer's possession held child sexual abuse material, yet not all victims in these images have been identified, adding to the complexity and scope of his predatory actions.
Families of the victims spoke to the repercussion of Newcomer's crimes at the sentencing, detailing the manipulation and harm inflicted upon their children, and the enduring struggle with healing and recovery, "He manipulated, drugged and abused our child," one father disclosed in court. Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Seattle field office, W. Mike Herrington, highlighted the danger posed by Newcomer, immediately resuming exploitation of children after his initial capture, but with this new sentence aims to signal the severe consequences for those preying on minors, as noted by the same press release.
Judge Chun has imposed a lifetime supervised release to follow Newcomer's prison term upon his guilt plea for Travel with intent to engage in sexual acts with a minor and two counts of attempted enticement of a minor, a crackdown that resonates with Project Safe Childhood's initiative, a nationwide movement striving against child sexual exploitation and abuse which onboard federal, state, and local forces to counter online exploitation of children more effectively and provide aid for the victims, for more details about Project Safe Childhood efforts one can visit their website.
