A 28-year-old man was taken into custody by the Seattle police SWAT team on Nov. 4 after a standoff in West Queen Anne, which began in the late afternoon and extended into the evening. As detailed in a Seattle Police Department Blog post, patrol officers first responded to the 2200 block of 15th Avenue West around 4:30 p.m. following reports of a resident making threats to kill another resident while brandishing a knife.
The situation escalated at approximately 6:15 p.m. when the suspect emerged from his apartment clad in body armor and a Kevlar helmet. Upon attempting to apprehend him, the police witnessed as he charged into a stairwell and began to stab a door with his knife. The man then retreated inside his apartment and barricaded himself from authorities, effectively commencing the standoff. Police negotiators and the SWAT team were promptly dispatched to the scene, where they attempted to coax the suspect into surrender.
A search warrant was obtained by the officers, following which the SWAT team was able to arrest the suspect at about 8:25 p.m. The operation culminated without further incident. During the standoff, multiple knives, body armor, and a Kevlar helmet were seized and are currently held as evidence.
According to the Seattle Police Department's reporting, while in custody, the suspect exhibited aggressive behavior. He reportedly bit, kicked, and spat on the arresting officers. He was eventually booked into the King County Jail, facing multiple felony charges and a $2,500 warrant for assault. Detectives from the Homicide and Assault Unit have been assigned to further investigate the incident.
