Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem made a significant announcement during a visit to Las Vegas, pledging over $1 billion into upgraded airport security measures. This investment, as reported by News 3 Las Vegas, is poised to comprehensively enhance screening technology at U.S. airports, with the Harry Reid International Airport among the first to benefit. The package includes advanced devices to scan both luggage and passengers, a move Noem described as "the biggest investment in screening technologies that we've seen in years."
Alongside technology improvements, Noem highlighted an initiative to better train airport employees to identify and mitigate potential threats, including the deployment of additional K9 units. According to News 3 Las Vegas, she stated that "One of the most effective things that we can do at security checkpoints is deploy K9 units as well, and so we will be training and facilitating more K9 units."
During her trip, Noem also took time to recognize the unwavering commitment of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers, who continued their duties amidst the 43-day government shutdown without pay. As a gesture of gratitude, bonus checks were distributed to TSA employees, with Noem personally handing them out to workers at various airports—including those at Harry Reid International Airport.
In comments obtained by KTNV, Noem stated, "Today, I'm announcing that I'm going to be giving the individuals behind me and many other TSOs across the country bonus checks. Bonus checks for doing their job with excellence." She singled out the exceptional efforts of agents like Angela Stephen, Michael Armstrong, Monica Degro, and James Gladwin for their tireless service during trying times. Funded by 2025's fiscal carryover, these rewards aimed to barely compensate for the financial hardships endured by these essential personnel.
Testimonies from TSA agents themselves highlighted the economic pressure they faced, as one employee shared with News 3 Las Vegas, "It was a different challenge going through the shutdown. This was the first one I had to go through, and it was rough. I went through my savings account." Noem lauded their steadfastness, acknowledging that they executed their responsibilities "with a smile on their face" despite the absence of a paycheck.
