It seems the Ottawa Senators have a knack for creating drama in the desert. On a Wednesday night showdown at T-Mobile Arena, the Senators squeezed past the Vegas Golden Knights with a thin 4-3 win after braving a shootout, as reported by AP News. This marks a rare triumph for the Senators in Vegas, considering their previous struggle at the venue with just one win registered before this game, back in March 2018.
Senators' Shane Pinto was the hero of the hour, clinching the only goal in the shootout, while his teammate, Jake Sanderson, supported the victory with a goal and two assists during regulation. The Golden Knights, even with the home-rink advantage, couldn't capitalize on their opportunities, leading to their downfall in yet another overtime game, leaving them with a record of 1-8 in such matches. Notably, Mark Stone made his comeback with a goal for the Golden Knights after a month sidelined due to a wrist injury, according to a statement obtained by NHL.com.
Sanderson scored a first-period power-play goal off a pass from Claude Giroux that bounced in off the post. The Golden Knights tied the game with goals from Mark Stone and Jack Eichel, sending it to overtime and a shootout. Senators goalie Linus Ullmark stopped all three shootout attempts to secure the win.
The Senators showed resilience, as Ottawa coach Travis Green highlighted the need for endurance, "We talked about playing 60 minutes," Green said, "We got a little tired. I’ve got to do a little better job of getting our fourth line out, getting them a few more minutes to save some energy later in games," in a statement obtained by NHL.com. On the other side, Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy acknowledged his players' effort and speed, with a particular nod to the chemistry within the line of Stone, Howden, and Mitch Marner.
The Senators head to St. Louis for their next game, while the Golden Knights aim to bounce back at home against Montreal. Both teams will look to improve and seek redemption as the season continues.
