The San Antonio Spurs managed to hold off the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night, clinching a 111–101 victory despite missing key players on both sides. The Spurs had to cope without All-Star center Victor Wembanyama and guard Stephon Castle, while the Grizzlies were without their star point guard Ja Morant, as reported by FoxSanAntonio.
With the big men sidelined, the Spurs called upon De’Aaron Fox and Harrison Barnes to step up, scoring 26 and 23 points respectively. Fox, who was reportedly challenged to be "aggressive on both sides of the ball," according to Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson in a statement obtained by Yahoo Sports, helped to lift the team's performance in the second half. The victory was emblematic of the Spurs' resilience, as the team mustered a strong defensive effort in the final quarter despite without their anchors Castle and Wembanyama.
San Antonio's bench also made substantial contributions with Keldon Johnson dropping in 18 points, and Kelly Olynyk adding 10 more. The game, which saw a rough start for the Spurs missing 10 of their first 12 field goal attempts, turned around when coach Johnson took a timeout 90 seconds into the contest. The tactical pause appeared to reenergize the Spurs, eventually grinding their way back from the early deficit and strengthening their lead with a 25–14 run in the fourth quarter.
In the absence of their star players, the Spurs’ half-court defense stepped up, causing difficulties for Memphis and forcing vital turnovers in crunch time. Wembanyama and Castle are expected to miss between two and four weeks due to their respective calf and hip injuries. Yet, having led by double digits in 86% of their games this season, the team showed it could compete with its depth and disciplined defensive scheme. The Spurs, now standing at 10-4, are set to host the Atlanta Hawks, who will be playing without their star point guard Trae Young, potentially evening out the scales for the injured Spurs squad, according to information by Yahoo Sports.
As the Spurs prepare for their upcoming game against the Hawks, they aim to continue their success within the Frost Bank Center and finish their five-game homestand strong. Despite the adversity presented by injuries, Barnes’ late-game heroics and the collective team effort give San Antonio a fighting chance to maintain their home court advantage as the season continues.
