Two more individuals have been linked to the attempted murder of Macomb Township businessman Eddie Jawad. Arrested Nov. 1, the pair from Sterling Heights include Rachard Huffman, 39, and his wife Dawn Huffman, 44, now facing serious charges. According to ClickOnDetroit, Rachard is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit embezzlement, while Dawn faces charges for embezzlement and conspiracy to commit embezzlement.
The Huffman couple's arrests add another layer to the ongoing investigation that already involved Jasan Delanta Martin, who was the initial suspect detained in connection with the attack on Jawad. WXYZ reports that the extrapolation of traffic cameras and a keen eye for mismatched license plates eventually led to Martin's arrest. He faced six charges, including assault with intent to murder, before an additional conspiracy to commit homicide charge was levelled against him.
The attack, all captured on surveillance, showed Jawad being ambushed outside his home on the morning of Oct. 14. After the shooting, the suspect fled in a vehicle that was later connected to Martin. The Macomb County Sheriff's Department worked in conjunction with local police departments and the FBI to trace and apprehend the suspect. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham commended the "total effort of law enforcement at every level to get this individual in custody," according to WXYZ.
Court proceedings for the Huffmans began today, Nov. 3 with arraignment at the 41A District Court in Shelby Township. According to C & G News, Rachard Huffman could face up to life in prison and is held on a $1,000,000 bond. Dawn Huffman, potentially facing 20 years in prison, has her bond set at $500,000. Both are required to wear GPS tethers if released on bail, with no 10% payment options available for either bond.
Eddie Jawad, who runs over 20 gas stations in the metro Detroit area, was fortunate to sustain only minor injuries from the attack.
