Residents along the Tampa Bay coastline are facing a series of weather warnings this Veterans Day, as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tampa detailed a cold snap accompanied by potentially hazardous beach conditions. A Cold Weather Advisory has been put in place due to "very cold wind chills as low as 24" which are expected across various counties, including Pinellas and Coastal Hillsborough, until 9 AM EST this morning. The NWS highlighted that prolonged exposure to these temperatures could lead to hypothermia.
In addition to the chilly temps, a High Surf Advisory and High Rip Current Risk are in effect, set to pose significant risks for swimmers and surfers. The NWS advised that large breaking waves of "2 to 7 feet expected in the surf zone" could emerge, and that dangerous rip currents are likely occurring from late Monday night through late Tuesday night in the areas including Coastal Manatee, Coastal Sarasota, and Coastal Lee counties. According to the advisory, "Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water" and thus, swimmers are urged to remain out of the water due to the risky surf conditions (NWS).
The disruptive weather continues to influence local Veterans Day events, with the advisory suggesting that those hoping to mark the holiday with coastal activities should rethink their plans. The cold weather also brings wind chill values that are low enough to "lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure," as indicated by the NWS. For those who choose to venture near the shorelines, precautions should be taken to heed the advice dispensed by authorities, including swimming near a lifeguard and never attempting to swim against the rip current.
