An extraordinary figure shared the spotlight during this event, USMC Retired Colonel Joe McPhail, who at 104 years of age, stands as a living testament to the courage etched throughout Marine Corps history; having bravely faced the crucibles of World War II's Pacific theater and the Korean War, collecting two Distinguished Flying Crosses for his feats, Governor Abbott bestowed upon Colonel McPhail a Texas flag and a proclamation which honored the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps, the Governor then stood by as Colonel McPhail led the traditional cake-cutting ceremony, slicing into the USMC's 250th birthday cake with a Marine Corps Officer's sword in a symbolic gesture of continuity and camaraderie amongst the Marines.
Among those accompanying Governor Abbott were figures such as USMC Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Dawsley, Texas Veterans Commission Secretary Chuck Wright, and Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Joe Esparza, all of whom share the bond of Marine service.
