A Thanksgiving morning in northwest Harris County took a violent turn when a dispute between neighbors escalated into gunfire, resulting in two people being shot and a third injured, according to deputies. Around 1 a.m. today, Harris County deputies responded to the 8000 block of Dodiewood Lane and found a man lying in the street with an apparent gunshot wound. Both shooting victims were transported to nearby hospitals and are expected to survive.
Deputies responded to reports of shots fired and found multiple victims upon arrival, investigators told Click2Houston. The late-night incident involved several people, and one individual who was not injured was detained at the scene, officials said.
Harris County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Freder Munoz said to ABC13 that the incident began after "several guests arrived at one of the residences" and a disagreement quickly escalated into a weapons disturbance. Deputies later recovered more than 20 shell casings scattered throughout the neighborhood, with some rounds striking two nearby homes, according to the station.
The Harris County District Attorney's Office has filed charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against one individual, Click2Houston reported. Authorities have not released the suspect's name or information regarding possible bail, and investigators said others who were hospitalized could also face charges as the case develops.
Deputies Say Home Camera Caught The Holiday Melee
A neighbor's surveillance camera recorded the incident, and investigators are reviewing the footage to determine who fired and why, according to ABC13. Sheriff's detectives are also examining physical evidence and conducting witness interviews to establish a timeline of how the morning gathering escalated into a street shooting.
Part Of A Rough Year For Northwest Harris County
Incidents involving neighbors and party guests have occurred multiple times in northwest Harris County this year. In March, a gun sale arranged through social media escalated into a shooting that injured four people in the same area. Local law enforcement officials have advised residents to preserve any video evidence and to avoid conflicts that could quickly become dangerous.
Legal Status
The aggravated assault case is now being handled by the District Attorney's office, where prosecutors will examine video footage, physical evidence, and witness statements before determining whether to pursue additional charges. It is not yet known when the defendant, if in custody, will next appear in court or whether prosecutors will seek an indictment.
Investigators are asking anyone with video or information related to the Thanksgiving shooting to contact the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The agency has not provided additional details as the investigation continues.
