Two residents suffered minor injuries after a house fire ravaged a residence on the Northeast Side of San Antonio this past Sunday evening. According to a KSAT report, the individuals were in the home near La Ventana and El Charro as the fire began, but managed to exit the structure before the arrival of the fire department.
The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) responded to the emergency call around 5:30 p.m. in the 5100 block of La Pocita. Despite the trying windy conditions not influencing the blaze, a second alarm was promptly required to summon additional crews to the scene. While the fire threatened to extend to an adjacent house, firefighters successfully contained it, resulting in only minor exterior damage to the neighboring structure, as per KENS 5.
The residents who escaped sustained minor injuries and were treated on the spot, negating the need for hospitalization. According to KENS 5, the SAFD, making an "aggressive interior attack," prevented the fire from spreading inside the home, explained SAFD spokesperson Joe Arrington. However, the home where the fire originated endured significant damage, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Efforts by the firefighters to control the blaze lasted approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Though some windows had been boarded up, complicating their entry, Arrington told KENS 5, "But we’re very fortunate we were able to keep it from moving to that neighboring house." Crews remained diligent at the scene into the evening to monitor for any residual hot spots and to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
Authorities have advised that the street will be closed for several hours during the clean-up and investigative process, which continues to delve into the circumstances surrounding the fire's origin. The community was spared a potentially greater disaster thanks to the rapid response and tactical approach of the SAFD. The investigation remains ongoing, and updates will be provided as new information is released.
