A tragic incident occurred at the U.S. Postal Service distribution center in Allen Park, Michigan, where a 36-year-old USPS employee was found deceased after reportedly getting trapped in a conveyor belt system. As CBS Detroit reports, the Allen Park Fire Department confirmed the employee's death, noting the incident took place at the distribution center located on Oakwood Blvd.
The discovery was made last Saturday, Nov. 8, with sources indicating that the man had been caught in the machine for several hours before being found. Referring to the same incident, Detroit Free Press reported that Allen Park Police Detective Lt. Jason Dobbertin stated the death "did not appear suspicious," and that the call to authorities was made around 12:25 p.m. that Saturday. The man, whose identity has yet to be disclosed by officials, was stuck in a mail handling machine, according to reports, and his absence was initially noticed by his wife, who contacted the facility after he failed to return home from his shift.
Investigation responsibilities fall to U.S. Postal Service authorities due to the federal jurisdiction of the building. The USPS has commented on the tragedy, stating, "The United States Postal Service is deeply saddened by the loss of our employee at the Detroit Network Distribution Center (NDC) in Allen Park, MI. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. The NDC is fully operational, at this time," as mentioned in both CBS Detroit and Detroit Free Press statements.
Further details have been released by ClickOnDetroit, which adds that the victim was a 30-year-old maintenance worker. The report corrects that it was his fiancée, not wife, who pondered the facility for three hours seeking assistance. She told Local 4 that she didn't call, contradicting earlier statements. This case has underscored the necessity for rigorous safety procedures and protocols within such facilities, with the current investigation aiming to piece together how the fatality occurred at the large mail processing facility. The USPS is conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the specifics of the man's death.
