A vacant single-story house on San Antonio’s South Side caught fire Monday night, resulting in a total loss and alarming nearby residents. Fire crews responded to heavy flames, extinguished the main blaze, and addressed remaining hot spots. No injuries were reported, and officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
According to KENS 5, San Antonio Fire Department units were dispatched around 9:55 p.m. to the 200 block of Benita Street, where they found the single-story home fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the main fire and then checked for lingering hot spots, while also addressing downed power lines reported along the side of the property.
Vacant homes keep landing in the fire report
Across San Antonio, neighbors have raised concerns about the risks posed by unsecured vacant homes, which they say can attract trespassers and create safety hazards. Similar incidents have occurred this year. In May, a vacant house on the West Side caught fire, and the flames spread to nearby homes after residents reported frequent trespassing at the property, as per KSAT.
Neighbors say Benita house sat empty and wide open
Residents near Benita Street told reporters that the burned home had been vacant for over a year and was not secured, with some noting frequent homeless activity on the property, as reported by KENS 5. Authorities say the Bexar County Fire Marshal's Office is leading the investigation, and crews remained on site to ensure utilities were safe before detectives began their work.
The San Antonio Fire Department and county investigators have reported no injuries. Officials are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact investigators. Updates will be provided as more details become available.
