In a decisive move for Washington state's judiciary, Attorney General Nick Brown has officially commented on the appointment of Colleen Melody to the Washington State Supreme Court. His public statement praised her legal skill and her years of service in the Attorney General's Office.
Attorney Melody, who held the position of Senior Assistant Attorney General and helmed the Wing Luke Civil Rights Division, has distinguished herself in an admittedly short tenure of just under a year, "Colleen is a brilliant attorney, the founding division director of the Wing Luke Civil Rights Division, and an inspirational leader to many at the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, even after just 11 months here, it is hard to imagine the office without Colleen’s expertise, savvy, toughness, and caring," said Brown in a sentiment echoed throughout the office and the state, as stated by the Attorney General's Office.
The Attorney General's Office, which acts as the state’s largest law firm, lauded the legacy that Melody leaves behind—a legacy marked by commitment to civil rights and a sharp legal mind capable of steering the state toward justice and equity. The office provides legal counsel to various state entities and enforces a broad spectrum of laws, including those surrounding consumer protection, civil rights, environmental safety and the prosecution of elder abuse, Medicaid fraud, and sexual predator cases across the majority of Washington's counties. Brown’s office said the appointment highlights Melody’s strong potential on the bench, noting that “there’s no place in Washington where Colleen could be more influential than on our highest court.”
