The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) recently teamed up with the Wisconsin Motor Carrier Association (WMCA) and the Wisconsin Council on Physical Disabilities to mark a notable update to state infrastructure. They celebrated the completion of the Sparta safety rest area, located westbound on Interstate 90 in Monroe County. As reported, the revamped facility now boasts an increase in truck parking, modernized amenities, and improved accessibility.

According to WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman, who presided over the event, "We’re so excited to open this modernized safety rest area showcasing enhancements to traveler safety and accessibility." Built in 1969, the old rest area was long overdue for an overhaul, previously offering a mere 16 truck parking stalls and outdated facilities. The modernization has expanded that to 70 truck parking spaces, which, situated on Interstate 90, a critical freight and passenger corridor, will benefit the steady stream of truckers and travelers alike.

WMCA President Dan Johnson, as part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasized the trucking industry's commitment to safety and lauded the effort to bring the project to fruition. "Truck drivers are the backbone of our economy and this new rest area will support driver well-being, improve highway safety, and strengthen Wisconsin's supply chain," Johnson told WisDOT.

Improving the safety rest area included better lighting and updated vending area for truck drivers and families taking a break from the road to use. For travelers with disabilities, these updates mean better access. WisDOT modernized the facility by adding ADA-compliant restrooms. "On behalf of the Council on Physical Disabilities, it’s great to see the family-assisted restrooms at the Sparta rest area and other Wisconsin rest areas in the future," Wisconsin Council on Physical Disabilities Chair Ben Barrett expressed as per WisDOT website. These are not just any restrooms but the state's first to include two new family-assisted restrooms fitted with height adjustable adult changing stations.

The price tag for the upgrades is steep, totaling $12.5 million, with a sizeable chunk covered by a federal grant. Having kicked off construction back in August 2024, the safety rest area is poised to fully open its doors to travelers in the coming weeks. It's a piece of a bigger initiative, as WisDOT is actively redeveloping two other safety rest areas along I-43, which are slated for a summer 2026 opening.

With 28 safety rest areas peppering Wisconsin's key highways, the revamped facilities are part of the state's push to encourage road safety and rest for travelers. WisDOT encourages the public to take advantage of their roadside facility map, an easy-to-use resource that helps locate safety rest areas and other roadside amenities.
