An 18-year-old suspect has been taken into custody by Nassau County police in connection with a shooting at a Long Island house party on November 22, which resulted in the death of 19-year-old college basketball player Amira McLeod and injuries to two others. Jacob McMillan, from Baldwin, is facing charges including murder and attempted murder.
The fatal incident, which occurred outside a residence commonly rented by college students, also left two Nassau Community College football players injured, according to ABC7NY. The shooting has affected the sports communities in the Bronx and New Rochelle, where McLeod, a forward on Monroe University’s Bronx campus team, played.
Investigation details show McMillan attended the party after seeing an invitation on social media. Detective Lieutenant George Darienzo, in a statement obtained by CBS News, said the suspect approached the party while Amira McLeod was nearby. An altercation occurred between McMillan and the party host, after which the suspect reportedly stepped back from a group of people and fired a handgun.
The weapon used in the shooting has not been recovered, and police have stated that McMillan has a criminal history, including an open burglary case from September. McLeod, a sophomore living in Monroe University’s New Rochelle campus dorms, was remembered fondly by her classmates. Her school biography noted ambitions beyond basketball, including plans to own a clothing and sneaker store, her coaches and CBS News reported.
McMillan, who did not comment, was escorted in handcuffs from the Nassau County Police Department. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The case remains under investigation as local authorities and the Long Island community respond to the November incident.
