A sweeping indictment has laid heavy charges against 19 individuals linked to the Courtlandt Over Everything and the ABG Crips gangs, according to Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark and New York City Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch. The charges, totaling 157 counts, range from conspiracy and attempted murder to robbery and weapons possession. The indictment follows a string of incidents, with three shootings occurring near the Bronx County Hall of Justice, placing the lives of jurors, court staff, and bystanders at risk, as reported by the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
In response to the indictment, the Bronx District Attorney's Office emphasized, "Once again, we are talking about teenagers getting their hands on guns and terrorizing communities." She noted the importance of addressing youth gun violence immediately and providing alternatives to gang life. The alleged violent encounters spanned nearly a year from December 19, 2024, to December 9, engaging in shootings and violent acts against their rivals. Commissioner Tisch, in her remarks, acknowledged the sustained efforts by NYPD detectives which led to these indictments, but not before a pattern of public endangerment had been established by the accused parties.
The authorities have detailed several particularly brazen attacks. On May 3, three defendants purportedly opened fire on five individuals while riding Citi Bikes. And on September 13, multiple individuals were at risk when defendants allegedly discharged weapons into a building's lobby. Further, an occurrence of violence infiltrated the Hall of Justice itself, where officers interrupted a fight and confiscated around 64 vials of cocaine from one of the defendants.
Five defendants were arraigned on Tuesday, before Bronx Supreme Court Justices Joseph McCormack and Guy Mitchell, the bails ranging from $25,000 in cash to remand pending bail application, as they are due back in court on December 22. Those already incarcerated will have later arraignments. This legal effort, detailed by District Attorney Clark, reveals a concerted move to quell the cycle of gang-related violence that has gripped portions of the Bronx.
Assistant District Attorneys Kimberly Gay, Lily Gebru, Charlayne White, and Sasha Abbott of the Violent Criminal Enterprise Bureau, with higher supervision by other officials, are leading the prosecution.
