Firefighters in Abingdon faced a vigorous battle against flames yesterday as they worked to extinguish a house fire that erupted in the 200 block of Suitland Place. The incident drew a swift response from the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company and Abingdon Fire Company, according to details shared by WMAR2 News. The smoke and flames were visible from MD-24, but at this time, there has been no information released on potential injuries or the cause of the blaze.
Further information was divulged when neighboring residents noticed light smoke emerging from a garage at 211 Suitland Place, where the fire took hold. This observation quickly led to a more pressing scene as two neighbors intervened to help evacuate the home’s senior residents to safety. The intervention was crucial; no injuries were reported as both seniors were able to exit the residence without harm, as reported by FOX Baltimore.
In the aftermath of the fire, which occurred around 4:15 p.m. yesterday, preliminary investigations by authorities suggested the fire was accidental. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal, the probable cause pointed to a discarded cigarette within the garage. This is despite earlier witness reports speculating that either the vehicle in the garage or possibly a battery charger might have been the culprits. Fire crews were commended for their swift action, which kept the fire from ravaging more of the home and prevented any damage to the neighboring property.
Authorities estimated the damage to the structure and its contents at approximately $500,000. The vehicle kept in the garage was deemed a total loss. Support for the affected homeowners is being provided by Harford County Disaster Assistance, as well as by the extended hands of friends and family.
