Commuters in Summit County should brace themselves for a series of construction-related disruptions, as outlined in a recent update from the Ohio Department of Transportation. Roadwork across multiple freeways will impact travel times and create a need for detours, particularly within the Akron area.
Started Sunday evening, December 7, drivers will face closures on ramps from East Ave. to I-76 with detours running through Russel Ave., Manchester Rd., South St., and then back to I-76 east, additional closures that began Monday include Bowery St. under I-76, which will remain shut between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. with designated eastbound and westbound detour routes provided, those looking to travel from I-76 east to SR 59 east will also need to reroute via Main St. during the nighttime hours from December 8 through December 10.
Further disruptions will occur on December 9, with the closure of the ramps from South St. to I-76 east and from I-76 west to SR 8 north—at these times, travelers should follow the posted detour signage directing them through Main St. for eastbound traffic and Main St. back to I-76 east for those heading north on SR 8. On Thursday, December 11, more ramp closings are scheduled, including the I-76 east/I-77 southbound at the Kenmore Leg, which will prompt detours through I-277 and I-77 north.
Aside from these immediate impacts, long-term construction projects are ongoing, with the ramp from Ghent Rd. to I-77 southbound slated to be closed until July 2026, and the State Route 8 bridge replacement set to relocate northbound lanes onto the new southbound bridge come December 6, there is also the SR 82 bridge in Sagamore Hills Township, which is closed through late December for repairs and SR 261/All American Bridge northbound which remains inaccessible until mid-February 2026, indicating a protracted series of construction activities that demand the public's patience and adaptability.
Residents can stay abreast of changes and plan their routes by referring to the Ohio Department of Transportation's official construction update. The series of construction events is expected to ensure safer, smoother travel in the long run, but for now, the mantra for those driving through the affected areas might well be: expect delays, follow the signs, and keep an eye on the calendar for completion dates, which remain, for some projects, as far out as summer 2028.
