It's a bustling time for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) as October 2025 passenger and cargo traffic statistics truly soar. According to a recent report by AUS, they've notched an 8.92% increase in passenger traffic compared to the same period last year, tallying a total of 2,086,037 travelers passing through its gates. This notable rise coincides with AUS's ongoing expansion effort, aptly named Journey With AUS, which aims to significantly enlarge its capacity and streamline the airport experience.
The month of October also witnessed a record-breaking day in AUS's history, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening a staggering 45,048 departing flyers on the Monday following the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix—a clear sign of Austin's burgeoning position as a hotspot destination for major events. In the midst of these expanding numbers, AUS is set to eagerly finalize funding agreements for its ambitious expansion project. Designed to be a self-funded endeavor, the project will rely on airport revenue, bonds, and Federal Aviation Administration grants, sans Austin taxpayer dollars.
Diving deeper into the stats, noteworthy leaps in airline passenger numbers paint a picture of a diversified and growing hub. Southwest Airlines led the pack with a 13.4% increase, ferrying 872,329 passengers, while Delta Air Lines experienced a robust 19.7% increase with 372,721 passengers. Not all airlines rode the same wave, though, as American Airlines saw a 7% dip, and JetBlue Airways faltered significantly with a 44.8% drop in travelers for October 2025.
Focusing on air cargo, the airport handled 27,389,776 lbs. in cargo for October 2025, marking a modest 0.63% increase from the previous year. This growth signifies a sustained appetite for goods transport through Austin's air gateways. Even so, international air cargo couldn't quite maintain altitude, observing a 15.07% descent. Sun Country Airlines managed to notably hike up its cargo capacity by 89.8%, moving 3,358,460 lbs. of goods. Such movements highlight the robust intricacies of global commerce and the importance of a well-heeled airport infrastructure capable to deftly adapting to varying market demands.
Year-to-date figures for January through October 2025 further underscore this narrative, revealing a 1.18% decrease in overall passenger traffic and a more pronounced 8.3% fall in total air cargo compared to the same period last year. Yet, there remain spots of growth; Frontier Airlines, for instance, skyrocketed its passenger count by 172.3%, and Sun Country Airlines enhanced its cargo haul by 34.3%. With aircraft operations showing a general uptick, it’s clear that despite fluctuations, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is carving out a larger role on the aviation stage, reinforced by its record-setting October achievements and the entrepreneurial spirit fueling its continued expansion.
