Avon Lake is set to breathe new life into a piece of its history. During a City Council meeting yesterday, local officials gave the green light for an agreement that would transform the former Erieview Elementary School into a vibrant community center. According to a statement released by the City of Avon Lake, the plan is to repurpose the building and its accompanying 9.48-acre property for a hub of recreational, social, and community engagement that spans every generation.
The deal struck is as strategic as it is communal, the selling price for the property is $500,000, or about $53,000 per acre, well below the average for the area. This payment, as outlined in the agreement, will be conducted in five annual installments to Avon Lake City School District beginning mid-2027. The strategic foresight lies not just in the acquisition but also in the funding. Monies allocated will come from the City's Recreation Trust Fund, steering clear of the General Fund earmarked for essential services such as law enforcement and public works.
Mayor Mark Spaetzel was upbeat about the acquisition, espousing the project's dual benefits for Avon Lake. "This purchase is a win-win for our community," Spaetzel is quoted in the city press release. "The Erieview building is a valuable community asset that is well-positioned to support recreational programs year-round, and it is in a great location."
Plans for the repurposed facility show a measured pace. The city will implement gradual improvements to ensure the facility meets local expectations. Part of the site may be leased out, igniting revenue streams to fund future community endeavors. If all goes as per the City's vision, Avon Lake residents can look forward to engaging in various recreational programs next year at the transformed Erieview landmark.
