The Baltimore Police Department is in mourning following the death of Officer James Beckham, who lost his life in a multi-vehicle accident on the Beltway in Parkville on Saturday. In a statement obtained by FOX Baltimore, Police Commissioner Richard Worley communicated the heavy impact of the tragedy, saying, "This is a profound and heartbreaking loss for Officer Beckham’s family, his colleagues in the Northwest District, for our Department and city." He added, "Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time."
According to a report by WBALTV, the crash occurred just after 8 a.m. on the Inner Loop of the Beltway at Perring Parkway. A preliminary investigation suggested that Beckham's vehicle struck the corner of another car, which led to two subsequent crashes involving other vehicles. Tragically, at the hospital where Beckham was taken following the incident, he was later pronounced dead.
Beckham was 31 and resided in Essex. Another driver, involved in the crash, was also hospitalised due to their injuries. The collision led to a closure of the Inner Loop for approximately 3 1/2 hours, while authorities managed the scene and initiated their investigation into the precise cause of this fatal series of events.
The Baltimore Police Department has yet to announce funeral arrangements for Officer Beckham.
