The Maryland Zoo is making headlines with its newest long-necked resident, "Big Mac," a young male giraffe who is adding both height and novelty to the existing herd. According to FOX Baltimore report, Big Mac arrived in Baltimore in early November and has been spending the subsequent weeks in quarantine. The much-anticipated public reveal of Big Mac is set for December 22 at the Giraffe House, where admirers can flock from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to catch a glimpse of the newest zoo celebrity.

The young giraffe's addition is a testament to the Maryland Zoo's concerted effort to increase the genetic diversity and vibrancy of its reticulated giraffes. The herd, which has impressively grown from a mere two to five members within a year, sees Big Mac as a beacon of its burgeoning giraffe community. Erin Cantwell-Grill, Mammal Curator at the Maryland Zoo, told WMAR-2 News, "Over the past year, we've been welcoming the next generation of the reticulated giraffe to Maryland Zoo." Following the recommendations from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan (SSP), Big Mac's integration is being carefully managed, after several weeks of already completing his quarantine and meeting the resident giraffes.

Big Mac has not only his youth but also his distinctive markings to distinguish him within the herd. An airplane-shaped spot graces the lower right side of his neck, while lightning-bolt patterns strike through the center of his ears, contributing to the animal's unique demeanor. Having reached an impressive height of 10.5 feet tall, Big Mac is on the fast track to becoming a standout figure at the Zoo. Visitors who wander into the Giraffe House next Monday will be sure to crane their necks in awe at this lofty creature.
