Yesterday, a community's alertness was critical in thwarting an alleged burglary at a Belfair home on Alderwood Rd. The Mason County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) was called to the scene after neighbors grew suspicious of a vehicle that seemed to be scouting the area. Despite the occupants claiming to be in search of gas, a dubious claim given the running engine, concerned neighbors decided to investigate further, according to an MCSO Facebook post.
In their vigilance, the residents noticed a ladder misplaced, an obvious sign of a break-in at the home of a neighbor not present at that moment. When deputies arrived, they encountered an uncooperative man inside. The Sheriff's Emergency Team, the Dept of Corrections, and additional Patrol Units were called in to support the initial responders. The deputies spotted several firearms within reach of the suspect, whose resistance led to a tense standoff. After negotiations, the MCSO successfully convinced the man to surrender, with the aid of a Shelton Police K9 to secure the premises, as mentioned in the social media post by the sheriff's office.
Further investigations revealed that the man was an active parolee with a history of burglary, assault with a firearm, and unlawful possession of firearms. The MCSO reported that all stolen property was recovered, and the man was subsequently booked into the Mason County Jail for burglary and parole violations. This incident underscores the crucial role that community members can play in crime prevention and public safety.
