Bethel Park Police responded to a violent altercation outside the AMC Theatre at the South Hills Village Mall on Tuesday. According to a WPXI report, the officers arrived around 4 p.m. to find a man who had been assaulted, along with evidence of an unknown number of shots being fired. Despite initial concerns, it was confirmed that no one was hit by gunfire during the incident.
Witnesses near the mall were thrown into a scene of chaos. One bystander, Mike Singer, recounted the moments to WPXI, stating, "When I got out of the car, I heard two gunshots. So, I get out of the car, and I look at what’s happening, and there are two guys in the middle of the street on the ground fighting, punching each other. Next thing ya know, they stand up and walk away together, really weird." In contrast, another individual caught in the unfolding event, Luke Panchura, told authorities, as per the same report, "We didn’t hear anything. We just walked out of the movies like it was a normal day, leaving the movie theater."
The Allegheny County Police released further details later, as mentioned by CBS Pittsburgh. An argument escalated rapidly when a juvenile set off a chain of violent events. After striking a second vehicle in the parking lot, the young individual entered into a physical confrontation with the driver of the damaged vehicle. During the scuffle, an 18-year-old man associated with the first vehicle discharged a firearm at the opposing driver. Shortly after, the juvenile and the shooter fled the scene in what was later identified as a stolen vehicle.
Following a pursuit, police caught up with the assailants in Dormont, where, after abandoning the vehicle on Route 19, the three male suspects attempted to escape on foot. Law enforcement agencies captured all suspects in a coordinated effort around the area. The ages of the individuals have not been disclosed at the time of reporting. In seeking justice, the District Attorney’s Office is liaising with the police to ascertain the most suitable charges.
One day ahead of New Year’s celebrations, the incident has left the mall-goers in shock and apprehension. Terri Balsam, a shopper who found herself amidst the unsettling situation, told CBS Pittsburgh, "It's terrible, it's scary. You don't want to take your kids out." As the investigation continues, local community members contend with the brazen violence that pierced the tranquility of their daily life.
