In a recent incident escalating over two days, a Burbank man was arrested after an intense standoff with police, stemming from what began as a family dispute and ended in a forced intervention by law enforcement due to concerns for family safety. According to KTLA, Burbank Police officers first arrived at the scene on East Orange Grove Avenue on Dec. 10, following reports of a trespassing disturbance involving an adult male wielding a hatchet.
The situation grew tenser when the man, later identified as Hardeep Sidhu, engaged in a verbal confrontation with family members and ignored commands to disarm, which eventually led to his retreat into the home while officers were on scene, who learned he was under a criminal protective order and had multiple warrants out for his arrest. The Burbank Police Department News Release indicated that resources, including a Mental Health Evaluation Team and crisis negotiators were brought in, but initial de-escalation attempts proved unsuccessful.
Family members clarified to officers that Sidhu did not reside at the home, expressing initial reluctance to press charges despite concerns over his behavior and potential mental health crisis. However, after evaluating the risk and consulting with the family, authorities departed once they could not persuade Sidhu to cooperate. "After several hours of unsuccessful de-escalation efforts and consultation with the family, officers cleared the scene," police said. Two days later, the police were summoned once more as the dynamics shifted with family members now reporting fear for their safety.
On their return on Dec. 12, police engaged in further de-escalation efforts; however, the situation culminated around 8:35 p.m. with the deployment of chemical agents to bring Sidhu into custody after tactics including crisis negotiation and less-lethal options had not resolved the standoff. Sidhu faces charges of robbery, elder abuse, narcotics possession, and violation of a court order. "The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Hardeep Sidhu of Burbank," the KTLA report stated, noting the arrest on suspicion of multiple offenses and the pending review of formal charges by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
