The incident which occurred in a banquet hall on the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue has sent shockwaves throughout the community and stirred a response from local and state lawmakers. "Prayers alone are not going to make these streets safe," former Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs told ABC10, underscoring the necessity of addressing core issues such as poverty, unstable housing, and lack of opportunity.
Tubbs, who is a candidate for lieutenant governor in 2026, emphasized during his interview with ABC10 the importance of focusing on prevention strategies that tackle these deep-seated causes of violence. In his tenure as mayor, he highlighted a coordinated effort between city, county, and federal agencies alongside community groups to intervene in the lives of individuals most at risk of committing shootings in Stockton.
Adding to these sentiments, newly appointed Senate President Pro Tempore Monique Limón pointed out the state's ongoing efforts to reinforce social safety nets. However, she stressed that despite California's tight gun laws, the battle against gun violence is larger than any single state — something California cannot win without support from other states to pass meaningful gun reform. "We'll be reviewing our existing laws. We're always looking to see if there are loopholes in our laws that could have prevented this," Limón stated, as reported by ABC10.
San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow expressed the community's outrage at the incident, calling the attackers "animals" for targeting a children's birthday party, as per CBS Sacramento. Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee reiterated in a social media post the shocking incongruity of violence at an event meant to be safe for families. Both local law enforcement and Governor Gavin Newsom's office have urged anyone with information on the shooting to come forward as the search for the suspects continues.
Amidst a chorus of calls for concrete change, Senator Jerry McNerney spoke at a vigil for the victims, advocating for enhanced public safety measures, increased access to counseling services, and education to provide a foundation for tackling the underlying causes of violence head-on. "To make sure that we have enough public safety," McNerney told ABC10, "and then another, to make sure we have the counseling services and services for homeless people, people that are in need. And then, education. Make sure that we’re providing education and jobs."
