A crash on last Saturday night in central Las Vegas left one man dead and another injured. Police said the collision happened around 9 p.m. at East St. Louis Avenue and South 6th Street, where one driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to a hospital.
What investigators say happened
According to investigators, a Mercedes headed east on East St. Louis Avenue at a high rate of speed and blew through a posted four-way stop before entering the intersection and slamming into a Ford. The impact shoved both vehicles farther east, snapped an overhead-mounted pole and sent one of the cars into a fence, as Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Detectives said they leaned on witness accounts, physical evidence and surveillance footage to piece together how the crash unfolded, while LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section stayed on scene to process debris and interview witnesses.
Victim and suspect identified
Authorities said the driver of the Ford was 46-year-old Julio Nave‑Giron of North Las Vegas, who was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The Mercedes driver was identified as 41‑year‑old Rogelio Camacho of Las Vegas. Investigators said he suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Police told reporters they believe Camacho was impaired, and officers booked him into the Clark County Detention Center on reckless driving and DUI-related counts, as per FOX5 Vegas.
Where this crash fits in the year's toll
LVMPD logged Nave‑Giron’s death as the department’s 152nd traffic-related fatality of the year, a grim milestone for the valley, as stated by Las Vegas Review-Journal. LVMPD reminded drivers to slow down and avoid driving impaired as roadway deaths remain close to last year’s numbers. Hoodline reported that road fatalities have reached 148.
Legal implications
Camacho’s booking on reckless driving and DUI-related allegations means he is currently in custody while prosecutors review the case, officials told FOX5 Vegas. Booking is a procedural step and is not a conviction. The Clark County District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file formal charges after detectives finish their investigation. Prosecutors are expected to weigh evidence from the crash scene, witness statements and any toxicology findings before making that call.
Investigation continues
LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section is continuing to review video and gather evidence from the intersection where the crash happened. Detectives are asking anyone with dash-cam or surveillance footage to contact investigators. The department has recently increased its traffic-safety messages as the number of roadway deaths remains high. Officials said more information, including possible charges or a coroner’s report, is expected after investigators finish their work and submit the case to prosecutors.
