A tragic set of events unfolded on Christmas Eve in West Columbus, resulting in the death of one man and the injury of two others. Just before the clock struck ten on a silent night, Richard Coverdale, 33, lost control of his vehicle, a tragic culmination to what should have been an evening of festivity and family.
According to NBC4i, Coverdale was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee east on Roberts Road when he hit a guardrail. The impact caused his vehicle to go airborne. After landing, the Jeep rolled over multiple times, ultimately ejecting him onto the grass. Medics rushed him to Riverside Hospital with life-threatening conditions, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead early Christmas morning at 2:17 a.m.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently being conducted by the Columbus police's accident investigation unit, as reported by WBNS. They've confirmed the circumstances leading up to the fatal event, providing a near-identical description of that harrowing night.
In a separate but equally heart-wrenching incident, a crash occurred earlier on the same day at the intersection of Roberts and Windflower roads. One person died, and two others were transported to local hospitals with injuries, as detailed by The Columbus Dispatch. The collision involved an SUV and a pickup truck, causing temporary road closures, although they have since been reopened, based on traffic surveillance from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The identity of the deceased and the conditions of the injured have not been disclosed by police dispatchers, pending the ongoing investigation by the Columbus Division of Police traffic unit. Local authorities are asking anyone with information about either of the crashes to step forward and contact Columbus police or Crime Stoppers at 614-645-4749.
