Two men died following a shooting at an apartment in Southfield, Michigan, on Christmas night, the Southfield Police Department reported. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the Riverstone Apartments in the 25000 block of Shiawassee Road, according to Audacy. Police said an earlier domestic assault that was not reported is believed to have preceded the exchange of gunfire involving a 30-year-old man from Detroit and a 20-year-old man from Madison Heights.

When officers arrived, they found three people suffering from gunshot wounds. The 30-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were transported to a hospital, where they later died from their injuries. As per ClickOnDetroit, investigators said the incident began after a woman was assaulted by her boyfriend and later sustained a gunshot wound to her hand. Police said she then invited a friend and a male acquaintance to the apartment. The friend, identified as a 23-year-old woman, arrived with a man from Madison Heights who was later involved in the exchange of gunfire and died from his injuries.

A 3-year-old boy was present during the incident but was not injured and has since been placed with a family member. FOX 2 Detroit reported that the 23-year-old woman who was shot in the hand is expected to recover. Authorities said the identities of the two men who died have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Police said the sequence of events followed an earlier reported assault, after which the boyfriend, identified as the 30-year-old man from Detroit, returned to the apartment. Authorities stated that he entered the residence, obtained a firearm, and fired shots. The other man then retrieved a gun and returned fire, according to investigators. Police said the two friends left the apartment and sought medical treatment at a nearby hospital, while the couple involved remained at the scene until emergency responders arrived.

The Southfield Police Department said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the department at (248) 796-5500 or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. Police said they are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
