Cleveland State University is set to transform two landmark buildings on its campus, with the renovation of historic Fenn Tower and Fenn Hall. Reported by Cleveland State's own newsroom, the move is part of the institution's larger initiative, Cleveland State United, aimed at enhancing academic programs, student success, and regional talent development.

Fenn Hall will undergo significant changes as part of the Biomedical Discovery Complex project, with over 20,000 square feet of new research lab space dedicated to biomedical science and engineering. CSU Board of Trustees Chair Tim Cosgrove said, in a statement obtained by Cleveland State University, "This University changed my life, and it is a privilege to help enrich the lives of current and future students – the renovations of Fenn Hall and Fenn Tower will do that for years to come." CSU's focus seems firmly planted on bolstering its STEM capabilities, reflecting Cosgrove’s impact on the community.

The design and site preparation for Fenn Hall's Phase I renovation are already in progress, with construction scheduled to start in the summer of 2026 and completion targeted for early 2028. According to CSU's announcement, Phase II will complement the new labs with high-tech classrooms and collaboration spaces, though it remains in the planning stage. "The labs that will be completed in Phase I are central to our extensive STEM academic and research program at CSU,” CSU senior vice president and provost, Dr. Nigamanth Sridhar, told CSU's newsroom.

Meanwhile, Fenn Tower, which closed in 2024 for repairs, is expected to reopen in August 2026. The building, which dates back to 1930, will now serve primarily as a residence hall for first-year students. The renovation will feature updated student rooms, common areas, and a secure entrance for residents only, encapsulating the school's commitment to modern sustainability and energy efficiency. According to CSU's newswroom, “Fenn Tower holds a special place in the history of Cleveland State, and the City of Cleveland. Its renovation represents both respect for our history and excitement for our future,” explained CSU President Dr. Laura Bloomberg, as she emphasizes the tower's importance for both heritage and student life.

To the residents' delight, the tower's upgrades include not just structural integrity but also reimagined rooms to enhance academic and social engagement. Adding to the new facade, the tower's public spaces are set to receive a revamp with facilities like a movie theatre and a ballroom designed for residential programming and community building. Reflecting on past experiences, Chair Cosgrove added, “I remember going to history class on the fourth floor of Fenn Tower with Dr. Holmes, an experience that remains unforgettable. We are fortunate to be able to steward this iconic building so future generations can be inspired by its historic significance as well as its beautiful views of the city and Lake Erie,” as reported by CSU's newsroom.
