A Columbus man, Caleb Johnson, has been handed a life sentence for the murder of Jahaan Harris during a June 2024 shooting on the city's southeast side, a Franklin County court has ruled. As detailed in the prosecutor's release, the incident took place around 1:40 a.m. on June 14, 2024, when Harris was fatally shot and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The conviction of Johnson followed after extensive evidence was presented, including surveillance footage that captured the events leading to Harris's death. Harris and his group encountered Johnson and his armed associates, and their attempt to flee resulted in a volley of gunfire and Harris being hit in the back as he was trying to escape. The court found Johnson guilty on November 7, with charges that included two counts of murder and several other related offenses, with Judge Kim Brown announcing the life sentence with possible parole after a minimum of 25 years served.
Authorities had arrested Johnson two weeks after the shooting in Chillicothe, with the search of his property yielding clothes worn at the time of the incident and a rifle that matched shell casings from the scene, confirming his involvement, according to the prosecutor's office. Harris, along with his brother and friends, was confirmed by detectives to be unarmed and was simply caught in a tragic circumstance.
Concurrent to Johnson's case, his co-defendants Chaz Cooley-Ward, Danielle Hardy, and D’Angelo Gravely also faced legal repercussions for their roles in the incident, with Cooley-Ward receiving a 20–25 years sentence and Hardy 5–7 years. Gravely was also sentenced, with the judge handing down a 4-5.5 year term on the same day as Johnson's sentencing. The harsh penalties signal a stern response from the justice system in curbing gun violence within the community.
