Motorists in Columbus have been witnessing a rise in gasoline prices over the past week. According to ABC 6 On Your Side, average gas prices in the area have increased by 13.8 cents per gallon, reaching $2.71 as of Monday. This pricing update comes from a survey conducted by GasBuddy, representing data from around 500 stations in Columbus.
Despite this recent increase, the cost of fuel remains below last month's average. Prices in Columbus are notably 37.7 cents per gallon less than the previous month's figures and 19.8 cents per gallon lower compared to last year at the same time. On the national stage, the average price of diesel has seen a decrease of 5.1 cents compared to last week, currently standing at $3.671 per gallon.
Patrick De Haan, the Head of Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy, has pointed out a reason behind these fluctuations. In a statement obtained by NBC 4, De Haan explained, "Gas prices continued to decline in most states last week, while some price cycling states saw temporary spikes to restore margins." De Haan also predicted a continuing trend of lower gas prices nationwide ahead of the holiday season.
He further explained that barring any major disruptions, prices are "likely to stay relatively low into the new year," according to NBC 4. The concept of price cycling, as De Haan mentioned, refers to periodic adjustments in fuel prices by gas stations, aimed at maintaining profitability. While this can cause temporary increases, the overall trend remains indicative of gas prices well below the $3 per gallon mark, providing a reprieve to consumers during a typically high-spending time of the year.
