Columbus City Schools (CCS) recently rolled out the red carpet for the winners of its "Heat Up Your Attendance!" Challenge, where schools battled it out to see who could amp up student turnouts from November 10 to December 12—Beatty Park Elementary and Mifflin Middle School snagged the top spots for most improved attendance, the former in the Elementary Division and the latter in the Middle School Division, as detailed in a report by CCS's website.
Employing strategies such as the Perfect Attendance Scrabble Board used at Beatty Park—to propel kids toward perfect attendance records, and special gatherings like Mifflin's Morning Town Halls for instilling positive synergies from the get-go, schools across the district ignited a wave of excitement and school spirit among students, Principal Jessica Waddell of Beatty Park leaned into a data-centric method, pinpointing support first to those most in need and enlarging that support slowly but surely, she rightfully claims that "Don’t rely on what you think—let the data guide you", which she conveyed in an interview with CCS.
In the case of Mifflin Middle School, the students themselves are key players in constructing the school atmosphere they're rooting for, which includes unique activities like "Mifflin's Got Talent" and "Fear Factor Incentive" to keep things engaging—Terri Coward-Burns, the principal, backs the notion that connecting with students on their level is critical, nodding to the importance of student input when she mentioned, "Get student voice. Find out what students need or are missing, and build systems that reflect that," in her statement to CCS.
The rest of the CCS realms did not take a back seat in this attendance upsurge, schools from six different regions made their mark by reinforcing robust attendance practices—this includes main champs from regions like Binns ES in Region 1 and Linden STEM K-6 in Region 6, these schools exemplified the collective push for a greater focus on attendance, confirming CCS's strive for making every day in school count, CCS applauds the united front put up by students, staff, families, all of whom played pivotal roles in uplifting the entire district's attendance culture as accentuated in their announcement.
