In an effort to confront the soaring costs of American health care, Congressman Glenn Grothman led a joint subcommittee hearing on December 10th. The focus of this hearing, ambitiously intent on driving the affordability of health care, was on the role technology could play. As reported by Oversight House, Grothman, who chairs the Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services, expressed major concerns regarding the country's health care spending, which totaled a staggering $4.9 trillion in 2023, or 18% of the U.S. GDP.

These figures, which have grown from consuming just 7% of GDP back in 1970 to their current levels, starkly showcase that increased spending is not doing the trick. Despite Americans coughing up twice as much per person for health care compared to other peer nations, the promise of better patient health remains unfulfilled. Grothman made a point that, sadly, nearly a third of this investment goes to waste, failing to better patient outcomes. "This would mean that over $1.6 trillion spent on healthcare that year was wasteful," the congressman highlighted.

Further exacerbating the scenario is an inefficient system bloated with administrative overhead. Grothman pointed out how this proliferation of administrative costs not only dwarfs the growth of clinical staff but also directly inflates the expenses shouldered by patients by means of increased prices and premiums. As Grothman cited, an often quoted fact, "more than half of this wasteful spending can be directly attributed to administrative expenses."

In the face of such opacity, wherein patients scheduling routine procedures remain clueless about costs or price comparisons between providers, Grothman suggested a turn towards technological advancements. There's never been more potential for automation and streamlined billing processes to transform the industry. "Just imagine how much more efficient our entire health system would be if more dollars were directed toward patient care rather than bureaucracy," he asserted.

The hearing put a spotlight on how technology could empower patients with price transparency and, by extension, stimulate competition, improve access, and ultimately, drive down costs. For more insights, the expert panel of witnesses was expected to shed light on the causes of rising costs and how technology will make health care more affordable during their testimony. The hearing, according to Oversight House, marks a concerted effort to address issues seemingly ingrained in the American health care system.
